Not all rodents have the same type of diet. Some need a high percentage of fibre (herbivores): rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas and common degus. Others require a high intake of starch (granivores): hamsters, mice, gerbils, rats and squirrels.
Small rodents need to gnaw constantly as their teeth continue to grow throughout their life and must be kept worn down. For this reason, treats made from pellets, dried vegetables or grains play an important role.
Hay is an excellent food supplement that is essential for herbivorous rodents. It provides extra roughage and helps to keep teeth worn down. They can eat as much as they want.
